Driving in Japan
Drive on the Left
In Japan, vehicles must drive on the left side of the road.
Strictly adhere to speed limits and traffic signs.
The maximum speed limit on general roads is 60 km/h, and on highways, it is 100 km/h.
Steering Wheel on the Right Side
Japanese vehicles have the steering wheel on the right side. Please follow traffic regulations and drive safely.
Seatbelts are Mandatory
All passengers must wear seatbelts, or they will be fined.
Child Safety Seats
Children under the age of six must use a child safety seat.
Traffic Lights
A red light means "stop." When the light is red, you must stop and wait until the light turns green.
A green arrow indicates that you may only turn in the direction indicated by the arrow.
No Turning on Red
When the light is red, all vehicles, including those going straight and turning left, must stop and wait until the light turns green before proceeding.
Yielding When Turning Right
In Japan, left-turning vehicles have priority. Therefore, when turning right, you must yield to oncoming vehicles. You can only turn right after the oncoming traffic has either proceeded straight or turned left.
Whether turning left or right, vehicles must always yield to pedestrians. Pay extra attention to pedestrians when making turns.
No Overtaking
Overtaking is prohibited in areas marked with a yellow line. Please wait patiently until you pass the prohibited section and overtake in a safe area.

Drunk driving is strictly prohibited. If a breathalyzer test detects alcohol, penalties will be imposed for drunk driving.
Refusal to take the test will also result in penalties. Passengers in the vehicle and those who encouraged drinking can also be penalized. Do not drive under the influence to avoid harming others.
Temporary Stops
When making a temporary stop, the vehicle must come to a complete halt. Before stopping, check for safety on both sides of the vehicle.
At railway crossings, a temporary stop is mandatory. Always stop, look, and listen before crossing, ensuring it is safe to proceed.
