Refueling a Car
At gas stations in Japan, there are two refueling methods provided by attendants: "full service," where the attendant refuels the vehicle as per the customer's request, and "self-service," where the customer refuels the vehicle themselves.
Full Service
- Park the vehicle with the fuel cap side next to the fuel pump and turn off the engine.
Inform the attendant of the type of fuel, the amount of fuel, or the amount to spend.
For example:- "Regular Man-Tan (Regular gasoline, fill up)"
- "20 liters, regular (20 liters of regular gasoline)"
- "2,000 yen, regular (2,000 yen worth of regular gasoline)"
- Japanese gas stations provide three types of fuel: "regular gasoline," "premium gasoline," and "diesel." Ensure to use the correct fuel type for your vehicle.
- Some gas stations only accept cash payments and do not accept credit cards.
Self-Service
- Park the vehicle with the fuel cap side next to the fuel pump and turn off the engine.
Choose the payment method.
- For cash payments
Insert cash for the desired fuel amount. Any change will be automatically returned after refueling. - For credit card payments
Insert your credit card and complete the authentication process.
- For cash payments
- Select from "premium gasoline," "regular gasoline," or "diesel." You can specify the amount of fuel or the amount to spend.
Adding the wrong fuel type can cause the vehicle to malfunction. Ensure to use the correct fuel type for your vehicle. - Start refueling. Open the fuel cap, insert the nozzle fully into the fuel tank, and press the handle to start refueling. It will automatically stop once the specified amount or amount is reached. Additionally, it will stop automatically when the tank is full (do not continue refueling). Collect your change and receipt.
Some gas stations only accept cash payments and do not accept credit cards. Additionally, at some gas stations, you need to inform the payment counter of the pump number you are using before proceeding with payment. Different payment methods may apply.
