For Holders of Foreign Driving Licenses (Reference: National Police Agency HP)

Please check the stamps in the respective columns for vehicles you can drive in categories B, C, and D.

  • B: Standard vehicles (vehicles with up to 9 seats)
  • C: Large trucks (over 3.5 tons)
  • D: Large buses (vehicles with 10 seats or more)

*If you wish to drive a vehicle carrying 10 or more passengers, you must have a stamp in category D on your International Driving Permit.

  1. Passport

    • Ensure you have been in Japan for less than one year.

*You need to present both your passport and International Driving Permit. The passport must have a stamp indicating the date of entry into Japan. If you entered via the airport "automated gate," inform the staff that your passport needs a stamp and have them stamp it. Without this stamp, you cannot rent a car.

*If you hold an International Driving Permit (IDP) and a driver's license from a third country, to ensure the legality and safety of the rental, you need to provide additional documents such as a residence permit or entry/exit permit from when the license was issued in that third country. These additional documents will help us verify the authenticity of the license and confirm your legal residence status at the time of license issuance. If you cannot provide these documents, we cannot process the car rental to protect our rights and safety.

*Restrictions for residents registered in the Basic Resident Register: If you are registered in the Basic Resident Register (Japanese or foreign residents staying in Japan for a long term) and return to Japan within three months after leaving, even if you meet the above conditions, you may not be able to drive in Japan.
